Fiber-reactive dye on cotton, hand
painted, machine pieced and quilted.
Dark lines were painted first on
white cotton cloth. The next
stage was to add the yellow and gold tones.
Finally I painted the turquoise.
Between each of these stages I had to wash the cloth several times
(by hand first), soak the cloth in a soda ash solution, and line dry the
cloth without using a dryer. After
this process was repeated for each color, I cut all the roses apart.
Then I added turquoise strips and pieces. Finally I sewed all of
this into three panels. One
observer said I was making my own pieces for a jigsaw puzzle.
One could also say I did this the hard way, but I loved the
challenge.
At first I used photographs as
models for the roses. Then I
started buying roses. Each
day the roses changed a bit and they could be painted from several
directions. Then I had to buy
more roses. My art required
me to buy flowers. How nice!
